What is VoIP and how does it work?

What is VoIP?

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a technology that enables voice calls to be transmitted over an internet connection instead of traditional phone lines. Instead of an analog signal, VoIP converts voice into digital data packets that travel across the network.

How does VoIP work?

The principle is straightforward:

  1. Voice capture — a microphone picks up your voice and converts it into an electrical signal
  2. Digitization — the analog signal is converted into digital data (codec)
  3. Packetization — the data is split into small packets
  4. Transmission — packets are sent over the internet to the destination device
  5. Decoding — on the recipient’s side, packets are reassembled and converted back to audio

The entire process takes milliseconds, so the call happens in real time.

Why are businesses switching to VoIP?

Lower costs

No more fees for traditional phone lines. Calls within the VoIP network are free, and calls to landlines and mobile networks are significantly cheaper.

Flexibility

Employees can make calls from anywhere — the office, home, or on the road. All they need is an internet connection.

Scalability

Adding a new user takes minutes, not days. No need to run new cables or purchase additional hardware.

Advanced features

A VoIP PBX offers features that would cost thousands per month with traditional telephony — IVR, call recording, queues, analytics, CRM integration, and more.
